Annual Interfaith Quilting Bee

Here is the info for the Quilting Bee I am making the quilt for and the few I have made over the years. http://www.namonline.org/site/c.ktJYJ7MNIuE/b.2116653/apps/s/content.asp?ct=6493447

Annual Interfaith Quilting Bee seeking quilting enthusiasts to donate time, talent

Area quilters are invited to participate in the 13th annual Interfaith Quilting Bee benefiting Northwest Assistance Ministries (NAM) on Saturday, Feb. 21 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 16535 Kleinwood Drive. The theme of this year’s Bee is “Piece by Piece: Stitching Lives Back Together.”

“The Quilting Bee is a coalition of volunteers dedicated to creating quilts for families in need,” said Becky Black, Quilting Bee Chairman. The event is free and open to the public, and beginners as well as experienced quilters are encouraged to attend.

Participants this year will donate the quilts to NAM programs including the Interfaith Hospitality Network (IHN) for families in transition from homelessness, Meals on Wheels, the Children’s Clinic and the Family Violence Center.

Civic or religious organizations, businesses and individuals may participate by donating quilting supplies, volunteering to assist other quilters or sponsoring their own quilt.

“The Interfaith Quilting Bee is truly a symbol of the mission of Northwest Assistance Ministries, which strives to meet basic human needs through Neighbors Helping Neighbors,” said Carole Little, NAM President and CEO. “The quilting bee goal is to create a heartfelt gift that provides warmth and security to the recipients.”

A recipient of a quilt from last year’s event said, “These quilts mean so much to us. Our children came into IHN feeling insecure and with nothing to call their own. [The quilts] help them to feel safe and loved. The hours these quilting volunteers invest will remain with us for the rest of our lives.”

A luncheon will follow the quilting bee. For information about the event or to register, call Becky Black at 832-717-0622. For information and photos of last year’s event, visit http://tc3.hccs.edu/publicservice1/.

Borders on!

Borders are finally on! I finished the borders Friday afternoon. Then ran out of steam for the backing and batting... I didn't get very good close up pictures of the quilt top but I wanted to include a picture of it before I finish and tie it. I found this (or rediscovered) country patchwork fabric which I used for the outer border. Not a bad find from my forgotten stash.

Piecing finished...

My goals for tomorrow...

I have finished piecing the scrappy quilt together!!

1. I plan to finish the borders tomorrow.
2. Put the back on it and prepare it to be tied.
I have decided to tie this quilt since a lot of my seams on the back refused to lay flat and I didn't really want to sit and Frog any of them.
3. Start tying!
I have just a few more weeks left before this quilt has to be done for the Quilting Bee. *sigh*

I will post pictures after I get the borders sewn on.

Progress...

Life happens! I am making progress on my Scrappy Quilt. Only have 4 more rows to piece together and then the borders. I was trying to squeeze in spending quality time with my daughter and then we both got sick... I started back to school yesterday for the Spring semester so my plan is to finish the top this week before the heavy homework load starts.

I survived IKEA!

I went to IKEA with my brother and father. My brother was on a mission to get a new desk and a few other things for his bedroom. I was going to look at the wardrobes or closet type things they had. Lets just say IKEA is having a sale right now and it was a three ring circus saying it was a ZOO just doesn't describe it well enough (the zoo is tame). Took us almost an hour and a half to get through IKEA amongst the crowd of people. I am so glad I left my daughter at home with grandma.

What I left there with:
1 pink hanger thingy for my daughter to put stuffed animals in.
1 pack of ceiling mount hooks
1 doll bed for katlynn's bday

I plan to quilt a little tonight.

Done cutting squares for Scrappy Square Quilt...

Alright... last night I finally finished cutting over 300 4" squares for my scrappy quilt I am making for NAM (Northwest Assistance Ministries). I even have enough to make another one! I am excited about that part because I decided last night that that one is going to be for my bed. So I may have to cut a few more different colors to give it a little bit more variety in each row. Minor detail. I figure I will be done piecing the scrappy quilt for NAM sometime on Monday. I would say sometime tomorrow but I am in a little bit, getting ready to venture off to IKEA with my brother. Knowing that Ikea is a customer trap where you have to walk all the way through the store to get to the exit. This may take about an hour. Then after that my daughter will be extra clingy when I come home (I am leaving her with Grandma). My sew time is late in the evenings usually.
Anyhow, as I make progress I will post a few pictures. Have a great Saturday.

Scrappy Square Quilt (for 2010 quilting bee)

Here is what I have so far for the quilt I want to make for the 2010 Quilting Bee. I still have a lot of squares to cut. I figure I need about 256 squares and I am probably about halfway there... I know what I will be doing tomorrow during the frigid weather changes! The weather is not supposed to be in the teens in south Texas (EVER!!!)

Ivy Cross Stitch

This is something I did for my now ex mother-in-law a few years ago. She had this thing for ivy in her bathroom. I made the pattern by putting a piece of this and a piece of another together from various cross stitch books. Might I say the back looks almost as pretty as the front. Perhaps I will mat it and sell it on etsy.

Close up of front.

The back...

Sunflower Cross Stitch (for Stacey)

I made this for my sister Stacey a few years back for Christmas. I made the pattern from pieces of different patterns. Stitched up pretty quick (I may have to reproduce this someday).

The finished framed picture!
